Iford Biodiversity Project Phase One - Houndean

Phase One of the Iford Biodiversity Project, commencing in Spring 2023 is focused on Houndean Farm, a ring-fenced block of land on the edge of Lewes. The land restoration plan involves the creation of scrub, woodland and grassland with scattered dewponds. This site is situated between two units of the Clayton to Offham Escarpment SSSIs and helps provide links between them. The site is also on the edge of the county town of Lewes in the heart of Sussex and is already enjoyed by walkers and leisure users, and increased access over certain areas will be enjoyed by many.

The scheme is designed to mirror nearby Ashcombe Bottom with its mix of woodland and grass, with tree planting based on areas of woodland that existed in the early 20th century, following studies of pre and post-war aerial footage. We expect to produce over 900 BNG units for sale at the completion of Phase One.
